So I have been working at a few different offices down here in Texas and as we all know hygienist cannot do LA. I was at this one office and I was doing scaling and root planing and the man had just had some restorative done so I asked the dentist if she did a bimandibular block. She said "yeah he is all numb." I didn't even get one tooth done and he was jumping out of the chair, so needless to say I brought the dentist back in and asked her to give him some more. She was just basically doing infills on the mandible and only penetrating like 3mm. I asked her if she ever does IA's she looked at me confused and said "not very often."
So my thing is how can I get her to do IA's so that my client will actually be numb for treatment. I don't know if she knew what an IA was. Anyways I don't want to come across as a know it all, but I also want my client to be comfortable.
Any suggestions for a way to bring this up with her.

Soph! Hi! This is scary...and a tough call. Maybe just say that the patient is still not profound and that he/she needs more profound anesthesia in order for you to do your job thoroughly?? I don't know! Tricky. Are you liking it it Texas. Jase and I have our own blog...check it out sometime. www.rachelandjasonnichols.blogspot. Miss you! P.S. Sorry we couldn't make it to the wedding :( I bet it was fantastic! Oh, and let me know what you decided to do with your dental predicament and if it worked.
ReplyDeleteAck!! That is a prime example why hygienists should be allowed to do LA. It sounds like she is thinking of her LA in terms of restorative and not really in terms of hygiene. I don't totally know what I would say! Maybe ask why she chooses LA the way she does and explain what your clients have been experiencing during hygiene services. It may be really helpful for her to know where your clients aren't numb---and she may conclude to do IA's on her own rather than having to prompt her.
ReplyDeleteSo I was temping at that office that I was talking about and I just haven't gone back. But on another note I have started placing the topical so that they will do an IA and other injections that I want. It worked today.
ReplyDeleteHaha! That's great Sophie!
